Interscholastic Athletics are governed by rules, regulations and guidelines as established by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), which is directly responsible to the State Education Department (SED) and the Commissioner of Education.

The NYSPHSAA is comprised of eleven sections or chapters in the state of New York.  Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County are members of Section 6 in NYSPHSAA. The purpose of Section 6 is to formulate and adopt policies that will enable public high schools to administer and govern interscholastic athletics in accordance with sound educational practices.

The NYSPHSAA and Section 6 establish many of the rules, regulations and policies that govern public school interscholastic athletic competition. Season start and end dates, the Selection/Classification program (process for moving up), eligibility, placement (which opponents are played), contest rules, safety policies, practice mandates, post season tournament opportunities (league, division, county and state play-offs) are some of the areas governed by these associations.

Fredonia Central School is also a member of the CCAA (Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association.)  The purpose of the CCAA is to strengthen the work of member schools in developing good sportsmanship and high ideals among contestants and among team, to promote all forms of athletics for high school boys and girls.  To strengthen and unify eligibility rules governing the contests and participation of contestants in interscholastic contests.  To make plans for and to conduct all athletic events between member schools, and to assign league schedules finally the CCAA serves to resolve any issues/disputes that may occur.
