Fredonia Middle School Dress Code Guidelines

Fredonia Middle School Student Dress Code Guidelines
We all must have pride in the way we dress in order to show that we are from Fredonia Middle School. The appearance of any student is primarily the responsibility of that individual and his or her parents. Here at FMS we expect students to maintain the type of appearance that is safe, that is not distracting and that is not obscene.
The guidelines listed below will help students and parents make wise choices when purchasing school clothing and when deciding what should and should not be worn to school.
* DON'T WEAR bedroom slippers, shoes with wheels, open toed or open heeled shoes that may be a health and safety hazard in classes such as science, technology or gym. If a student's footwear prevents them from safely participating in an activity, the student will be asked to change shoes or sit out of the activity and make the time up at a later date.
* DO WEAR " kid friendly " shoes and sneakers that will allow participation in a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors.
* DON'T WEAR t-shirts or other articles of clothing that offend people with written messages, pictures or logos that are sexually explicit, that contain hidden innuendos or that advertise hate, sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
* DO WEAR comfortable t-shirts that show your pride in our school, your favorite brand, your favorite sports team or favorite club.
* DON'T WEAR shirts that expose your midriff, even if it is only when you raise your arms.
* DON'T WEAR halter tops, shirts with spaghetti straps, off the shoulder shirts or any other type of shirt that does not completely cover your private body parts or undergarments.
* DON'T WEAR shorts and skirts that are too short.
* DO WEAR comfortable shorts and skirts at least as long as your fingertips when your hands are down at your side.
* DON'T WEAR pants so baggy or brief that they show your bottom or undergarments and constantly need to be pulled up.
* DON'T WEAR shirts, pants, shorts or skirts that are so tight or see through that one can see your private parts or undergarments.
* DO WEAR comfortable and well fitting shirts, pants, shorts or skirts that allow for a variety of activities.
* DON'T WEAR heavy makeup, heavy perfume or cologne, heavy chains, spiked collars or bracelets that are distracting to others, offensive to others or that may cause injury to one's self or to others.
* DO WEAR makeup, bracelets and necklaces that express your personality but are not distracting, offensive or dangerous to others.
Stuff Not Included Here:  The Fredonia Middle School Site Based Team developed this dress code. It has been reviewed by the PTC and Board of Education. The Site Based Team is made up of parents, teachers and the Middle School Principal. The policy is fair and supports the learning environment the FMS community is trying to promote. The guidelines listed above will help kids make the right decisions when they dress for school in the morning. Because it is impossible to list all the ways that a student could dress either appropriately or inappropriately there may come a time when a male or female staff member is asked to determine if a student's attire is appropriate for school. Students whose clothing is determined to be inappropriate will be given a warning and asked to change or wear a cover up. Parents may be called to provide a change of clothing and students will not be allowed to attend classes until they are properly dressed. Students wearing chains, spiked necklaces or any other attire that may cause injury will be asked to turn the items over to the principal. Students wearing heavy makeup will be asked to remove it. Students who refuse these requests or who continually dress inappropriately are subject to disciplinary measures that may include, but are not limited to time out, detention, in-school suspension or out of school suspension.
