Geography

  • The North American Quilt: A Living Geography Project -In this interactive project from OnlineClass, North American classes research weekly geography questions and contribute their findings to a "quilt of information" on the Web. Geography topics are based on the National Geography Standards and begin with the physical earth and move through natural land features, eco-systems, weather, wildlife, land use (agriculture, cities, undeveloped land), all the way to immigration and population histories, North American folk and home-grown art. Expert guests will be available for student questions via e-mail. The project runs from January through June.

  • Mapping the future "Pictures tell a story better than words. And Brent Allison, head of the University of Minnesota's Borchert Map Library, has applied this lesson. His experimental ARL Electronic Atlas techniques can be seen in a demonstration of how census information can be translated into graphical data, then overlaid on maps. Efforts here map the USA, and several metropolitan areas, to show age and income and housing data. A couple of clicks and you'll be able to answer the question "Where have all the young men gone." The maps show the answer is "west."" -USA Today

  • Argus Map Viewer Innovations in the ancient art of mapmaking are now being found on the Net. Download the viewer, and sample maps, and zoom anywhere in the USA,right down to street level. Another demographic map uses colored layers and graphs to present information. A map of Bostonincludes major building outlines, landmarks and hyperlinks to local websites.

  • Australia
    • Destination Australia - Most people harbour a particular image of Australia, such as the Opera House or Ayers Rock, yet these famous icons do scant justice to the richness of Australia's natural treasures and its cultural diversity. Australia offers a wealth of travel experiences, from the drama of the outback and the spectacle of the Great Barrier Reef to the cosmopolitanism of Sydney and arguably the best beaches in the world. Australia is an enormous country, and visitors expecting to see an opera in Sydney one night and meet Crocodile Dundee the next will have to re-think their grasp of geography. It is this sheer vastness, and the friction between the ancient land steeped in Aboriginal lore and the New World culture being heaped upon it, which gives Australia much of its character.

    • Guide to Australia -This GUIDE TO AUSTRALIA project aims to compile links to all available on-line information resources about Australia fordistribution via World Wide Web.
