SQ3R-TEXT READING METHOD
- SURVEY:
- Look over your entire assignment. Look at the
chapter and section titles, headings, outlines, introduction, summary,
questions, maps, charts, and diagrams. This helps you get a basic idea of what
you will read about and what information it will tell.
Use the handouts," What's in the Chapter" and "Graphic Aid

- QUESTION:
- Divide your assignment into smaller
sections. Use each dark print heading as a section. Write a question you want
the first section to answer. You usually make the heading into a question. This
allows you to read with a purpose-to find the answer to your question. Ask who,
what, when, where, why or how. Your headings are guideposts. By turning these guideposts
into questions, you'll know what you’re reading about.
- READ:
- Read the first section of the assignment.
It will be easier because you will keep in mind the question you want
answered. Sometimes standing while you read could keep you concentrating better.
You may put a light penciled * in the margin on items of particular importance.
(Just erase them later).
- RECITE:
- Recite or repeat what you have learned from reading
the section. Make sure you have answered your question. Write this down and take
notes on what you believe are the most important ideas or facts. Do this
without looking at the book if you can.
** You do each section of your
assignment this way.
- REVIEW:
- When you have finished the entire assignment, read
over all of your notes. Reread your notes about a week later and then study
these for your test.
